Qatar Visa on Arrival

Qatar Visa on Arrival: Requirements, Eligible Countries & How It Works

Planning a trip to Qatar and wondering if you can get a visa on arrival? You may have already noticed how scattered the information is. One website gives a few details, another says something completely different, and it’s rarely clear how to check your eligibility online. If you want the full Qatar Visa on Arrival process in one place, you often end up with ten open tabs and still feel unsure.

We built this guide to make that search much easier. Here you will find the complete Qatar Visa on Arrival check, along with a simple guide that walks you through each step. We cover the Qatar Visa on Arrival in an easy way, so you can understand the requirements without any confusion. There is no need to look anywhere else, as everything is explained clearly on this page. Read on, and you will know exactly what to do before you land.

What Is a Qatar Visa on Arrival?

A visa on arrival means you do not apply in advance at an embassy. You travel, present your passport and supporting documents at immigration, and receive permission to enter. For many nationalities this is a free waiver; for others it is a paid visa.

Two points matter before you book a flight:

  • Eligibility depends on nationality. Your passport decides your route, so check that, not your country of residence.
  • Entry is never automatic. Immigration officers make the final decision, and airlines may refuse boarding if your documents look incomplete.

If you are not eligible, Qatar offers an online visa through the Hayya platform, covered below.

Who Is Eligible for Qatar Visa on Arrival?

Visit Qatar, the official tourism site, says 102 nationalities qualify for visa-free entry, and it runs a nationality checker. The table below summarizes the structure; confirm your own passport there.

Traveler groupEntry routeTypical stayKey conditions
GCC citizens (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE)No visa neededNo set tourist limitPassport or GCC ID
Most European passports and a few othersFree visa-free entry on arrivalUp to 90 daysPassport validity, return ticket, accommodation
US citizensFree visa-free entryMultiple-entry permit valid two years or until passport expiry; up to 90 days per stay (per Visit Qatar)Passport valid 3+ months, confirmed hotel booking
Many other nationalities (for example UK, Canada, Australia, Japan)Free visa-free entryCommonly 30 daysSame document checks
India, Pakistan, Thailand, IranConditional visa on arrivalCommonly 30 daysMandatory Discover Qatar hotel booking; see Pakistan note
Residents of GCC states; holders of valid Schengen, UK, US, Australia, NZ or Canada visasPaid visa on arrival (QAR 100) or Hayya A2/A3 onlinePer visaProof of residence or qualifying visa
Everyone elseHayya A1 e-visa before travelUsually 30 daysHotel or host registration

Your eligibility is generally determined by your nationality, not simply the country you are traveling from. Living in the UAE or the US does not give a non-citizen the same rights as a citizen, though residents of some regions can use special routes such as the A2 and A3 visas.

Qatar Visa on Arrival Requirements

RequirementWhat travelers should know
PassportValid at least three months from arrival, per Visit Qatar
Return/onward ticketRequired for at least some categories
AccommodationHotel booking or registered host; some nationalities must use Discover Qatar
Health insuranceOfficially recommended
NationalityMust be on an eligible list
Other documentsPossibly proof of funds or residency, depending on category

Passport. Official tourism guidance says three months of validity from arrival. Older published rules and many travel sites say six months, so the safest approach is to travel with six months if your passport allows it. Temporary or emergency passports may not qualify for visa-free entry; one travel guide says holders of temporary passports must apply in advance, so ask your airline or Qatar’s authorities if that is your situation. Keep at least one blank page free for stamps.

Return ticket. Officers can ask for confirmed onward or return travel as proof you will leave. Carry a printout or e-ticket even when you are in a category that does not explicitly list it.

Qatar Visa on Arrival Countries

Qatar’s Ministry of Interior has been reported as publishing a list of 34 nationalities eligible for the 90-day free visa, and a separate list of 47 for 30 days. I could verify the 90-day list only through news reports, not the portal itself, so use it as a guide.

GroupCountries (as reported)Stay
90-day groupAustria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Malaysia, Seychelles, Bahamas, TurkeyUp to 90 days
30-day groupIncludes South Africa and other nationalities; full list on the official checkerUp to 30 days
USHandled separately by Visit QatarUp to 90 days per stay

Lists have shifted over the years, and third-party sites disagree with each other, so always run your passport through the official checker rather than relying on a blog table, including this one.

Qatar Visa on Arrival for Major Nationalities

Only nationalities with something specific to add are covered here.

Indian Citizens

India falls in the conditional group. Discover Qatar, the official hotel platform, states that the Ministry of Interior requires Indian passport holders to make a Discover Qatar visa-on-arrival hotel booking before travel. Hotel bookings made through other websites are not accepted for this purpose. Qatar Airways Holidays also lists a confirmed return ticket and valid passport among the conditions. See our guide on Qatar visa for Indians.

Pakistani Citizens

This is the group where the rules changed most recently. Pakistan is listed alongside India for the Discover Qatar hotel requirement, but reports citing an advisory from the Pakistan Embassy in Doha say Qatar suspended visa on arrival for Pakistani nationals on 31 March 2026, with travelers told to obtain a visa in advance. I found no confirmation that the service has resumed. Treat visa on arrival as unavailable unless the Qatar Ministry of Interior or the embassy confirms otherwise, and plan on a Hayya e-visa. See Qatar visa for Pakistanis.

US Citizens

Visit Qatar states that US citizens receive a visa valid for two years or until passport expiry, whichever comes first, allowing multiple entries of up to 90 days each. A confirmed hotel booking and a passport valid three months are listed. Visa-free entry is not the same as a Qatar-Oman joint visa, which is a separate 30-day product.

UK, Canadian and Australian Citizens

These passports sit in the free group and are also eligible for the Qatar-Oman joint tourist visa, issued on arrival, valid 30 days for both countries with multiple entries, and extendable for 30 more days for a fee, according to Visit Qatar. The joint visa suits trips that combine both countries.

Passport Validity

Three months from arrival is the figure on the official tourism page, while older announcements and several guides cite six months. This is a genuine discrepancy, and officials, not blogs, decide at the border. Practical advice: check your passport expiry now, and renew first if it expires within six months of your trip.

Hotel and Accommodation Requirements

Not every traveler needs the same proof. The official visa checker shows a confirmed hotel booking for several categories, and Hayya applications require either a hotel reservation or accommodation with family or friends approved through the Hayya portal.

The strictest rule applies to India, Pakistan, Thailand and Iran: the booking must be made through Discover Qatar, and the Ministry of Interior may add other nationalities. Discover Qatar also charges a QAR 100 cancellation fee if authorities reject the application, so read its terms before paying.

If you are staying with relatives, register them through Hayya’s “Host Family & Friends” service rather than relying on a verbal address.

Return Ticket Requirement

Authorities want assurance you will leave within your permitted stay. A confirmed return or onward ticket answers that. Visit Qatar specifically lists a confirmed round ticket for at least one eligible group, and airlines often check for it at departure, so buy a refundable fare if your plans are flexible.

Health Insurance

Visit Qatar describes health insurance as recommended for all visitors, and says travelers without a policy can buy one on arrival. The Ministry of Public Health has a health insurance information page.

Some third-party sites state that insurance is mandatory for visa applicants and for extensions beyond 30 days. I could not verify this from an official source, so confirm it with the Ministry of Interior before you extend or apply for a Hayya visa. Ordinary travel insurance is a private purchase and is not the same thing as Qatar’s government health-insurance scheme, though it is wise to carry cover that includes medical care.

How to Get Qatar Visa on Arrival at the Airport

  • Check your nationality on the official Visit Qatar visa page.
  • Book a Discover Qatar hotel first if your passport requires it.
  • Prepare your passport, return ticket and accommodation proof, on paper or on your phone.
  • Land at Hamad International Airport and follow the signs to immigration.
  • Present your documents. If your category pays a fee, expect to pay QAR 100 at the airport.
  • Receive your entry permission, then collect baggage and go through customs.

For airport details, see Hamad International Airport on Visit Qatar.

How Long Can You Stay?

Keep these terms apart: permitted stay is how many days you may remain per visit, validity is how long the permit lasts, and entries is how many times you can use it.

GroupPermitted stayValidity and entries
90-day groupUp to 90 daysReported as valid for 180 days with multiple entries
US citizensUp to 90 days per stayTwo years or passport expiry; multiple entries
30-day groupUp to 30 daysVaries; check the official tool
Qatar-Oman joint visa30 daysMultiple entries to both countries

Can You Extend It?

For the Qatar-Oman joint visa, Visit Qatar confirms a 30-day extension for a fee. For standard visa-free entry, travelers in the 30-day group are widely reported to extend once for 30 days through the Ministry of Interior’s online services or the Metrash2 app, but I could not confirm the current rules, fees or eligibility on an official page.

Extension fees quoted online range from QAR 100 to QAR 200, which tells you the figures are not reliable. Apply before your permit expires, using only government channels, and confirm any fee on the official portal. Ninety-day permits may have different rules, so ask the Ministry of Interior.

Qatar Visa on Arrival Fees

  • Free: visa-free entry for most eligible nationalities.
  • QAR 100: paid visa on arrival for certain categories, such as GCC residents and holders of qualifying Western visas, per Visit Qatar.
  • QAR 100: Hayya e-visa fee, applied during the online process.
  • Hotel costs: your Discover Qatar booking is a separate expense.

Fees can change, so check the amount on the official portal before travel. See our Qatar visa fees page.

Transit Passengers

Staying inside the airport transit area is different from entering Qatar. If you plan to leave the terminal, you need to qualify for entry. Visit Qatar says Qatar Airways passengers with at least a six-hour layover at Hamad who are not eligible for visa-free entry can apply for a transit visa at the Discover Qatar Transit Desk, and a transit visa valid up to four days is available for longer stopovers. Terms apply. See Qatar transit visa.

Families and Children

Each traveler, including children, needs their own passport, and each person must meet the nationality, validity and accommodation rules. Children generally travel under the same entry category as accompanying parents of the same nationality, but I found no official guidance on extra documents for minors. Carry birth certificates and, if one parent travels alone, a consent letter as a precaution, and ask your airline. Hayya’s A4 visa covers companions of GCC citizens, who must travel with their sponsor.

What If You Are Not Eligible?

Apply for the right visa before flying:

  • Hayya A1: tourist e-visa for nationalities that do not qualify for visa-free entry; QAR 100 once approved; requires accommodation.
  • Hayya A2: for residents of other GCC countries.
  • Hayya A3: for holders of valid Schengen, UK, US, Australian, NZ or Canadian visas.
  • Transit visa: for eligible Qatar Airways layovers.

Apply only through Hayya or the Ministry of Interior. Avoid agents promising guaranteed approval.

Common Mistakes Travelers Make

  • Assuming every nationality qualifies.
  • Confusing nationality with country of residence.
  • Traveling with a passport near expiry.
  • Booking a hotel on the wrong website for categories that require Discover Qatar.
  • Skipping the return ticket.
  • Trusting old blog posts. Visa rules, including Pakistan’s, changed in 2026.
  • Not checking the official checker the week of departure.
